Fram oil filters are trash...

look how much better the old one flows and has the customers engine in mind and not their profit margins.. So disappointing today's ethics.

Those filters are very impressive. It was very nice of Jamie to send you the used filter to inspect. It's one thing to see a filter before it has been used but seeing it after being used really shows the quality of the filter. Another great video. 👍👍👍

That 45yr old filter is probably still in production today and sold as the Tough Guard or Ultra Guard. Would be interesting to see it compared to the “higher” products.

The soot/sludge found inside this filter is quite normal for 6,000 miles of usage. You may not see it on a less restrictive filter. This appears to be a quality made filter and likely has a higher grade media that filters out a bit more than an average filter. Some folks think that these filters should be all squeaky clean inside, which is not a bad thing but it is also not a bad thing to see a bit of debris caught by the filter. The filter would not be necessary if it did not absorb and remove anything from the oil. Think about it!

I just looked it up on that 79 Fram filter is said it's a Bendix Company, Sadly they went out of business in 1983.

Oil filter it read "MAHLE TENNEX CORPORATION" meaning its by MAHLE JAPAN DIVISION. MAHLE brand is German. 15400-PLC-004/15400-PLM-A02 is made by Honeywell/FRAM. 15400-RTA-003 looks to be MAHLE The following look identical to Filtech A01 filters. 1.) Been using Fram filters and Valvoline oil for as long as I’ve been driving (over 40 years). Never had an oil issue unless it was a leak. Always changed the oil between 3000-5000 miles (or 3-4 months) Back when you could do a full tuneup and oil change for roughly $20. And most of the parts were available in Kmart auto department

You should have probably mixed these additives with gasoline, since that’s how they are used inside your motor.

I have worked in a Mahle filter factory located in Austria as an electrician for 5 years, maintaining and repairing the machines that made filters like this. And the Factory produced both Mahle and Mann filters, which is interesting

I wonder if a fancier version of the modern one has more like the older specs or if its just branding on the same modern cheapo.

I would go with the Boss, but if I wanted to go with an inexpensive filter, the Bosch looks like it would be a winner. I wouldn't want to use the Bosch with longer filter change intervals {Over 5000 miles} or if I drove my vehicle like someone who wants to tear their vehicle up. {Hard and fast. Someone who wants to pretend that they are race car drivers.}

The filter media "might" be the same. The Boss was rated at 99% at 25mm, whereas the Wix was rated at 99% at 35mm. In your measurements, the Boss was a little thicker. Could that just be normal variation on thickness of any filter media? Maybe! I wouldn't guarantee that the Boss filters out smaller particles, but my guess is that it probably does. Hm. Either way, two really good filters. Great comparison.

I worked at Perkins diesel oil. All our filters were actually fram they were good stuff. Everything’s been cheapened for the CEOs of these stinking corporations they make me sick 😢😮😮

Fram is absolute GARBAGE! Get a WIX or a NAPA gold!!

If I missed it in the comments sorry but I noticed no one brought up the fact that the name Fram is now owned by Advance Auto Parts. I've worked there for 9 years and we slap the Fram name on all kinds of stuff. Just like we own the Diehard name too. They actually had team members at my the store peeling Autocraft stickers off batteries and replacing them with Diehard labels on the batteries when they first obtained the name and I refused to do it. This video was interesting but not really a revelation. Now the Fram filters come in 3 grades with the orange filter as the lowest quality. I only use the Fram Force or Fram Titanium levels on my cars and this video shows the reason why.

How do you think this compares to a Motorcraft FL500S? Trying to decide on a filter for my 3.5 EcoBoost.

Fun comparison. More filter material sure seems like it would be better at filtering, but when the pleats are closed as we saw in the old Fram, I have to believe that would restrict flow somewhat, at least until the more-open, better-flowing pleats filled with particles. I really like Westfield, BTW.

You will have to go back further than that. I already thought that Fram filters were crap back in the 70's. Back then I used Purolator filters. The old Fram is still way better than the new one though.

The date of manufacture might be the difference. They would probably be the exact same if they had the same manufacture date.

Oil has gotten a lot better than it was back then so they can get away with less ... That said millions of Fram filters in use if they were "destroying engines" like some on here claim they wouldn't be in business. They are engineered as cheap as possible to do the job. That's it but they do they job. I personally don't use them because I can spend $5 more and get a Wix or Napa Gold, $2 more for a filter like the Wix Made Microguard or even $1 less and get a super tech that is better. There's no reason to buy a Fram Extra Guard.

To me, the takeaway is that FRAM was never the tops, but it's worse now. (I was discouraged from using FRAM filters as a new driver. These types of videos prove why.) It's amazing how much they've changed their quality over the years, but I guess that's not so uncommon. Anyway, thanks for doing this 👍👍👍

I love this video. I think the deformation and uneven spacing of the filter media on Old Filter shows exactly what the rusty baseplate shows. Moisture.

I think the mobile 1 is better but is it worth double the cost? No.

You measure the paper thickness incorrectly. You may want to change you technique when you do this. Measure 5 pleats (10 layers) at the same time and apply some force to make sure you measure the paper and not the air between the pleats. The result divide by 10 and you will get the correct number which is going to be around 0.4 mm +/- 0.1 mm. Not 0.9 mm or 0.6 mm. Those are totally wrong numbers.

I would take the AE due to seam and deep pleats, extra filter media. For 5000k use, AE all the way.

How does one go about sending W.C. Wrencher a used oil filter? Don't think I've ever seen an FVP brand filter taken apart and would love to see what it looks like inside after being used.
